Lu Rong (Cornu Cervi Pantotrichum):
Also known as Velvet Antler, Lu Rong (Cornu Cervi Pantotrichum) is an herb so powerful, it has been banned in use by Olympic Athletes.
Lu Rong Velvet Deer Antler has been used for centuries and is harvested without harm to the animals. They are the fastest growing tissue in mammals and actually completely regenerate each year.

Ling Zhi Reishi (Ganoderma):
Ling Zhi Reishi is an adaptogenic herb known to build immunity and restore the body to its natural state helping organs to function efficiently. It helps blood circulation and builds blood and qi. It has been shown to increase resistance to oxygen deficiency in cardiac muscles, increase cardiac contractility and lower blood pressure.

Considered to have anti-aging effects, Lu Zhi Reishi has been associated with longevity. Sweet in taste, with neutral properties, Ling Zhi Reishi’s main functions is nourishing the Heart and strengthening the Qi and blood to treat Heart and Spleen deficiencies. It is used as a remedy for insomnia, forgetfulness, fatigue and poor appetite.

Research: One clinical study showed that administration of Ling Zhi Reishi has effective results on treating patients with neurasthenia. The therapeutic effects of Ling Zhi Reishi include sedation, hypnosis and regulation of the immune system. [1]

Dong Chong Xia Cao (Cordyceps):
Dong Chong Xia Cao (Cordyceps) is one of the most valued tonics in traditional Chinese medicine. Entering the Lung and Kidney channels, this sweet and warm herb is primarily used to treat impotence and premature ejaculation. Because of its nourishing properties, Dong Chong Xia Cao strengthens the Kidney yang and augments jing, resolving conditions such as spermatorrhea, frequent urination, nocturnal emission, premature ejaculation and impotence. Good at reinforcing Kidney and Lung channels, Dong Chong Xia Cao can also be used to treat chronic respiratory disorders, such as chronic cough or phlegmatic blood cough.

Research: In one study, 197 patients with sexual disorders were treated with Dong Chong Xia Cao for 40 days, with satisfactory results. [1]

Ren Shen (Radix Ginseng):
According to traditional Chinese medicine, lack of qi and blood nourishment to the Heart shen can lead to insomnia, palpitation, confusion and forgetfulness. Slightly warm in nature, Ren Shen (Radix Ginseng), nourishes Heart qi, calms the shen and improves mental functions. Ren Shen can also be used to strengthen the body and restore vitality. When Spleen is deficient, food can no longer be transformed into energy. As result, fatigue, lack of energy, listlessness, nausea and poor appetite can occur. Ren Shen boosts spleen function and nourishes the yuan source qi energy.

Research: Ten patients in shock due to profuse bleeding were treated with an herb formula containing Ren Shen, along with electro-acupuncture, with good results. [1]

Huang Qi (Radix Astragali):
According to traditional Chinese medicine, when there is a disharmony between the Liver and Spleen, the transformation and transportation functions of the Spleen suffer. As a result, fluids become stagnant and damp-heat begins to accumulate. Sweet and slightly warm, Huang Qi (Radix Astragali) strengthens the Spleen qi, fixing the Spleen’s inability to carry out its transportation functions. Huang Qi is a key herb in promoting normal circulation of water and treating conditions such as facial edema, superficial edema and sensations of heaviness in the body. Excellent at treating Spleen qi deficiency, Huang Qi can also treat conditions like fatigue, shallow face appearance, tired extremities and other Spleen deficiency symptoms.

Research: According to laboratory studies, decoction of Huang Qi has been shown to increase the basal metabolic rate in mice. [1]

Xi Yang Shen (Radix Panacis Quinquefolii):
Also known as American ginseng root, Xi Yang Shen (Radix Panacis Quinquefolii) is commonly used to strengthen qi and nourish yin. Cold in temperature and sweet and bitter in flavor Xi Yang Shen is known to promote the generation of body fluids. Therefore, it is used to treat conditions such as cough, wheezing, scanty sputum, and loss of voice or hemoptysis. Besides its ability to promote body fluids, Xi Yang Shen can also be used to clear heat and treat symptoms like irritability, thirst and fatigue.

Research: Administration of Xi Yang Shen is associated with marked ant fatigue and antidiuretic effects, and an increased resistance to hypoxia. [1]

Hong Jian Tian (Herba Rhodiole Roseae):
Also known as Arctic Root, Hong Jian Tian has been used for thousands of years in traditional Chinese medicine as an elixir of longevity. Cold in temperature, with a sweet and astringent taste, Hong Jian Tian clears the Lung and stops coughing. Moreover, it can be used to quicken the blood and stop bleeding.

He Shou Wu (Radix Rehmanniae Preparata):
Slightly warm in nature, with a bitter-sweet taste, He Shou Wu (Radix Rehmanniae Preparata) acts on the Liver and Kidney channels, nourishing the blood and replenishing Jing. Deficient Liver Blood can lead to dizziness, blurred vision, gray hair, soreness and weakness in the lower back and knees, and spermatorrhea. Due to its basic functions – to nourish and invigorate the blood – He Shou Wu is considered to by one the best tonics. Since He Shou Wu focuses on replenishing Yin and essence and invigorating the Kidney and Liver, this sweet and bitter herb can also be used to treat the most common symptoms of menopause.

Research: He Shou Wu is also used to treat dizziness, insomnia, prematurely gray hair and soreness. According to one study, a formula containing this herb was 88.98% effective in treating 36 patients with prematurely gray hair.

Wu Wei Zi (Fructus Schisandrae Chinensis):
Also known as the “Five Flavor Herb”, Wu Wei Zi (Fructus Schisandrae Chinensis) can be effective on many channels, but, due to its sour dominance, its main fronts are the Kidney, Lung and Heart. Wu Wei Zi’s main property is the ability to reign the fluid which is lost from sweating or urine, rising the Yang Qi and helping it circulate though the body. Since night sweats usually occur due to a Ying and Jing deficiency, Wu Wei Zi balances these two energies in the body, reducing excessive loss of body fluids.
Another important property of Wu Wei Zi is calming the Shen (spirit) and tranquilizing the heart. This powerful herb has sedative properties and can treat Yin and blood deficiency. Symptoms such as palpitations, anxiety or insomnia can be improved with a Wu Wei Zi formula.

Research: According to laboratory studies, both water and alcohol extract of Wu Wei Zi stimulate the lungs to increase the rate and depth of respiration. [1]

Mai Men Dong (Radix Ophiopogonis):
According to traditional Chinese medicine, Mai Men Dong (Radix Ophiopogonis) is believed to moisten the Lung, nourish the Yin and strengthen the Stomach. It is also used to treat Heart-Yin deficiency problems. For ancient Chinese medicine, a weaken Lung is the result of Yin deficiency and can lead to complications such as dry throat, dry cough or difficult to expectorate sputum. Mai Men Dong can not only treat dry mouth and cough, but it can also nourish Stomach-Yin and promote the generation of fluids.

Research: Intravenous injections of Mai Men Dong have been shown to be effective in treating drug-induced arrhythmia in rats. [1]

Bai Zhu (Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae):
Known to invigorated the Qi and strengthen the Spleen, Bai Zhu (Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae) is frequently used in Chinese medicine to eliminate dampness, promote diuresis and stop sweats. This bitter-sweet herb can also be a remedy for blood deficiency. Rich, nutritive and nourishing, Bai Zhu invigorates the Spleen, strengthens the Wei and unblocks blood stagnation. It can be used to eliminate night sweats and stop spontaneous perspiration.

Fu Ling (Poria)
Used since ancient times, Fu Ling, also known as Poria, has commonly been used to nourish and strengthen the spleen and calm the mind. According to traditional Chinese medicine, this sweet and bland herb covers the channels of heart, lungs, spleen and kidneys. For women, spleen and heart imbalances can lead to prolonged periods with little flow or to early and abundant menstruations. Due to its properties, this formula using Fu Ling can invigorate both the spleen and the heart, balancing the blood and Yin functions of the body. It also has an effect on the digestive system and can lower blood sugar. It is also used to treat urinary difficulties, dampness, diarrhea, edema, headache or dizziness.

Research: In a study conducted on mice, investigating the regulatory effects of Fu Ling, show that mice treated with this formula had significantly increased the spleen cell ability to secrete. [1]

Zhi Gan Cao (Radix Glycyrrhizae Preparata):
Zhi Gan Cao (Radix Glycyrrhizae Preparata) is the honey-fried version of Gan Cao. Stronger than the unprocessed herb, Zhi Gan Cao is even more effective in strengthening the Qi. This sweet plant balances the Yin elements in the body and invigorates the Spleen and Stomach, improving the transformation and transportation functions of these channels. As a result, Zhi Gan Cao can treat disorders such as fatigues, shortness of breath or loose stools. Acting on the Spleen channel, Zhi Gan Cao can also be used to treat cramps and pain, especially in the abdominal tissues. Cramps are a result of Spleen deficiency and Liver excess and this sweet, neutral herb is known to harmonize these elements.

Research: According to one study, 8 out of 9 patients with declining pituitary function were treated successfully with a Gan Cao formula. [1]

Sheng Jiang (Rhizoma Zingiberis recens):
Sheng Jiang (Rhizoma Zingiveris Recens), also known as fresh ginger root, has been used in Asian cooking recipes since ancient times. Valued for its health properties, Shen Jiang is also used in Chinese medicine to treat and prevent colds, enteritis and stomach problems. Slightly warm, Shen Jiang can induce perspiration and is commonly used to treat the early stages of wind-cold syndrome. This acrid herb can warm the Lung, dispelling cold and stopping coughing.

Research: Administration of Shen Jiang has been shown to effectively reduce the severity of nausea and vomiting in patients undergoing chemotherapy. [1]

Da Zao (Fructus Jujubae):
Da Zao (Fructus Jujubae), also known as Jujube fruit, has been used in Chinese medicine for more than 4.000 years. Sweet and warm, and rich in vitamin C, it is mainly used to strengthen the middle-Jiao and to nourish the blood. Clinically, Da Zao treats disorders such as shortness of breath, fatigue, loose stool, decreased food intake and diarrhea. Da Zao also has a calming effect, relaxing the Shen (Spirit) and treating irritability, disturbed sleep and emotional instability in zang zao.

Research: According to one researchs study, Da Zao has a sedative effect on the central nervous system, lowering blood pressure and reducing spontaneous motor activities. [1]
