Hemorrhoids (also known as piles) are dilated blood vessels in your rectum or anus. It is estimated that about 75% of Americans have had problems with hemorrhoids. They often resolve spontaneously, but if they don't, there are hemorrhoid treatments which can be quite effective.
There are a number of ways that you will know you have hemorrhoids. These are as follows:
- There may be no pain but some bleeding from the anus.
- You may have the feeling that your bowel isn't empty.
- You can experience pain in the anal area.
- A burning sensation is felt around the anus.
- Itching is another common symptom of hemorrhoids.
- Mucus discharge from the anus is also a symptom.
Prevention of Hemorrhoids
This can be achieved by having a high fiber diet. Similarly, a fiber supplement such as psyllium can be used to soften the stools so that the hemorrhoids are less painful. Softer stools mean less pressure on the anus so they are less likely to get worse.
Fiber in the diet is beneficial for avoiding constipation which prevents hemorrhoids developing in the first place. They are also more likely to resolve without intervention if you have a high fiber diet.
Dealing With Hemorrhoids
A diagnosis of hemorrhoids can be made by your doctor who may prescribe a cream but there are a number of ways to treat hemorrhoids that you can use at home. For example, some topical creams are available over the counter without a prescription.
There are a number of things you can do daily to manage hemorrhoids:
- Wearing loose, cotton clothing is a good idea.
- Using moist wipes or damp toilet paper instead of dry toilet roll.
Topical Hemorrhoid Treatment
Some of the following are used to ease the pain of hemorrhoids. These include applying aloe vera, witch hazel or Ma Ying Long Hemorrhoids herbal ointment. Using these methods to manage hemorrhoids prevents them getting any worse and will ease any pain, burning or itching experienced.
Using a Sitz Bath
A sitz bath is used for women after childbirth as well as for hemorrhoid treatment. A warm sitz bath, with Epsom salts or baking soda added to the water, can be used effectively in managing hemorrhoids but it is worth pointing out that the anal area needs to be dried well after a sitz bath.
Medical Intervention for Hemorrhoids
Sclerotherapy is the oldest hemorrhoid treatment and involves injecting a liquid with the aim of shrinking the hemorrhoids
Rubber band ligation is done by tying off the hemorrhoid with a tight rubber band so that the hemorrhoid tissue dies off.
We use a combination of Ma Ying Long Hemorrhoids ointment and an internal herbal supplement called Hemorclear which together work quickly and can also be used preventatively.
