ACNE
When oil or sebum that normally drains to the surface of the skin obstructs follicles, then pimples or zits occur. Hormonal changes near menopause, menstrual cycles, puberty or pregnancy can cause sebum secretions to increase creating additional blockage which allows bacteria and yeast to grow, causing inflammation in the skin and acne.

The type of acne is defined by the type of infection and its intensity.
-Secretions that are caught beneath the skin are Whiteheads.
-Oils & sebum that break through the skin are often black from pigment deposits.
-Painful, pus-filled infections under the skin or “underground cysts” are cystic acne.

CAUSE OF ACNE IN TCM:
The lungs control the skin in Chinese medicine with acne being a sign of heat in the intestines and lungs.  Our approach is to clear heat in the intestines and lungs and to detoxify while reducing stress -the cause of 95% of all disease. I highly recommend you work with an acupuncturist in your area with weekly sessions for best results.

HELP ME HELP YOU.
Do the things recommended in every category below:  Herbs, Diet, Exercise, Sleep, Acupuncture!

Do you really want to make a change?  Then do it all and be the change you want to see.
Yes "Skin Clear" will help you, but to see quick, lasting results, change your life as suggested.

CATEGORIES OF ACNE & HERBAL RECOMMENDATIONS:
I like to ask patients to categorize themselves so as to direct them to the best herbal formula for treatment.  The main categories have to do with Hormones, Stress, Toxicity & Everyday Acne.

TOXICITY:
Most people have a buildup of toxins in their bodies and can benefit from a simple bowel detox.
ƒBowel movements are very important for healthy skin. Most of the toxins in our bodies are flushed and eliminated through healthy bowel movements, urination and sweating. Food should move completely through our system in 24 hours. However due to processed foods and lack of fiber, it can take some people over 60 hours. When the large intestine and colon are not functioning efficiently, wastes remain in the body for days. Toxins may deposit along the colon wall, which is a porous material designed to reabsorb unused water and redistribute in the body. The body will then try to excrete these toxins through the skin and urine.

Acne Location for toxicity -Toxicity acne can be all over and is often related to digestion.  Frequently appears around the forehead, between the brows & can even appear on the back.

Herbal Treatment Protocol:
-Start with “Poo” formula to detox bowels for 5 days and then add in “Skin Clear” for 4-6 weeks. Add in Stress formula as needed.

STRESS:
Stress is the number one cause of all ailments in the body. Stress causes the body to go into flight or flight mode which then releases excess cortisol, the stress hormone and to slow down the release of fats and oils thus clogging the pores.

Acne Location -Stress acne tends to appear near the nose and a bit near the forehead and a bit at times on the back.

Herbal Treatment Protocol:  Start with “Poo” formula to detox bowels for 5 days and then add in “Skin Clear” for 4-6 weeks. Add in Stress formula as needed increasing dose during periods of extreme stress.  Should be taken for 4-6 weeks every day, then decrease or maintain dose according to stress levels and acne persistence.

HORMONES:
Women and Men all have cyclical hormonal changes -the most obvious being the 28 cycle that women have each month. For women, acne that comes and goes and appears most frequently during the 6-7 days before menstruation.

Acne Location  -Hormonal acne often appears along the jaw-line and near the mouth.

Herbal Treatment Protocol:
-Note on a scale of 1-10 how bad your acne is during it’s worst time of the month. Note on a scale of 1-10 how bad your pain is during worse day of menstruation. This will give us a base from which to refer to in the future as things improve.

Start with “Women’s Harmony” to balance hormones ongoing for 4-8 weeks. When your cycle is on time, no clots in blood, pain levels have been cut in half, then start decreasing dose of “Women’s Harmony over the next 2 weeks.
-You've had this type of menstrual cycle for year, give it one or two cycles to balance and reset for lasting results. The rest of your health and life will also improve with it.

-ADD “Skin Clear” just before you normally would start to get hormonal acne each month and continue through end of acne stage  of cycle.

EVERYDAY ACNE:
Acne that is ongoing and has been chronic for a period of months or even years needs to be addressed with a complete well balanced approach.

Acne Location: For this group, acne has appeared just about everywhere on the face and maybe other places on the body over time.

Herbal Treatment:   Start with “Poo” formula to detox bowels for 5 days and then add in “Skin Clear” for 4-8 weeks. Add in "Stress Plus Heat" formula since much of your life has been dealing with the stress associated with bad skin -it can be more traumatic then you realize.

If stress increases, just increase dose during periods of extreme stress.  Should be taken for 4-6 weeks every day, then decrease or maintain dose according to stress levels and acne persistence.

Give the following attention in your Life to achieve the best results!!!

SLEEP:  Sleep is the time when new cells regenerate. The best hours to sleep are 10 pm to 12 am as it is the most active time for cell regeneration.  Read the book “Sleep Smarter” by Shawn Stevenson for the best actionable tips to better, deeper sleep.  I LOVE this book and have stack of them I loan out to all my patients.

HEALTHY EATING:
* GOOD: pears, squash, cucumbers,  potatoes, cherry, watermelon, winter melon, celery, carrots, cabbage, dandelions, aloe vera, mulberry leaf, carrot tops, lettuce,s, papaya, persimmons, raspberries, buckwheat, alfalfa sprouts, millet, brown rice, mung beans, lentils, split peas. beet tops,

* AVOID: processed foods, sugar, dairy products, chocolate, caffeine, carbonated beverages, nuts, seeds, shellfish, and fatty, fried food.

HOME REMEDIES:
* This will cool the inflammation. To make a salve blend 2 tablespoons 100% aloe gel with some blended cucumber. Apply externally to acne and leave it on for 15 minutes, then wash it off.

* Lubricated the intestines -drink 12-14 ounces of warm water mixed with 1 teaspoon of honey every morning on an empty stomach. Toxins can end up accumulating in the liver and skin if the bowels are not moved regularly.

DAILY SUPPLEMENTS:
*Vitamin A can help to reduce production of oil and does size should be about 1,000 to 2,000 mg a day.

* Taking up to 30 milligrams of zinc a day can help symptoms of acne.

* A Vitamin B complex can be helpful for acne that gets worse during a woman’s period.  Vitamin B6 is most helpful but a complex is good.

HERBAL THERAPY:
* I like the use of the several formulas mentioned already based on the individual’s needs. There is also a classic formula called Fang Feng Tong Sheng San often used for acne and can be found in health stores that is descent.

* Topically tea tree oil is a common essential oil that can be applied to acne to help eliminate bacteria. A compound called terpinen 4-ol is responsible for its antimicrobial activity.  A good level to use is a 5 percent tea tree oil solution made by mixing 1 part tea tree oil to 19 parts water and using it as a skin cleanser.

EXERCISE:
Increasing the circulation helps immunity and sweating opens the pores and dislodges oils.  Washing immediately after exercise is important for this reason.

ACUPRESSURE:
* One of the best heat clearing points in the body used by acupuncturist can also be done at home using acupressure. This point is called Winding Gulch (LI-11). This point is at the crook of the elbow, it is easiest to find by seeing a picture -google it and look at images. Then press and hold it for 1 minute, alternating arms.  Do this 5-10 minutes each day to clear heat and toxins.

* A second point is called Inner Court (ST-44), This point is located between the second and third toes of your foot between the web. Pinch the web between the two toes. Hold for 3 to 5 minutes, then repeat on the other foot.

AVOID:
* Some medications can make acne worse such as steroids, birth control pills, psychotropic drugs.
* Being overweight can make acne worse as well as stress or the use of chemical cosmetic, skin, and hair care products.

ADVICE:
Be patient with yourself and your treatment. In my clinical experience, some cases can take 4-8 weeks to clear up and some can take 4-6 months. Each person responds differently. I recommend working closely with an acupuncturist & herbalist in your area.

BOOKS:
There is a great book on women’s hormones which can help you find additional information about hormonal imbalances called “The Hormone Cure” by Sara Gottfried, a Harvard trained MD who supports Acupuncture and herbal remedies.

Allergies

Treatment of Allergies With Acupuncture
Regular Acupuncture and Chinese herbal formulas are an excellent natural alternative to western medications for the treatment of allergies.  A study in the Annals of Internal Medicine showed that Acupuncture reduces allergy symptoms.

Acute Symptoms -Stuffy Nose, Itchy Eyes:
During the allergy season, we use Acupuncture and Chinese Herbal formulas to alleviate acute symptoms by reducing inflammation, eliminating toxins.  There are several Chinese herbal formulas that will clear the nose quickly and keep inflammation down.   With proper diagnosis, the patient can keep these herbs on hand at all times to prevent allergic symptoms.

Chronic Condition:
When the symptoms have cleared, or after the pollen season, we focus on building up the immune system, nourishing the lung and kidney qi and building the qi of the spleen.  The idea is to treat the root cause of the problem and bring the body’s immune system back into balance.  Chinese herbs are very effective in building the body's ability to resist pathogens in the future.

Chinese Herbs:
There are 8-10 powerfully effective Chinese Herbal Formulas for the symptoms of Allergies and their causes.  One should always consult a Licensed Acupuncturist before taking herbs as the diagnosis of each individual and their symptoms is unique.

Treatment Protocol:
1-2 treatments a week during the acute stage of allergies followed by 1 treatment a week for 2 weeks.  After a series of treatments, most patients use an ongoing herbal formula to build their immune systems in this natural approach to treating allergies. We also prescribe an acute formula to have on hand during seasonal changes.  Treatments are recommended every few months as maintenance for good health.

Arthritis

Treatment of Arthritis With Acupuncture:
Research shows that acupuncture is effective in managing the pain and other symptoms associated with arthritis. Clinical trials and meta analysis show that acupuncture can reduce the severity of arthritis pain as well as the frequency of recurrence, while at the same time improve quality of life factors such as the range of motion of a joint.  Other traditional Chinese medical therapies such as herbal formulas and qigong have also shown promising results.

What To Expect:
The treatment program for Arthritis is 1-2 treatments a week for 4 weeks, a re-evaluation of the patient’s response, followed by 1 treatment per week for four weeks.  I use a combination of therapies tailored to the patient’s specific needs and treatments may be altered over time in response to a changing presentation of the illness.  Treatments usually include acupuncture and an herbal formula.

Cholesterol & Blood Pressure

Treatment of Cholesterol & High Blood Pressure With Acupuncture:

Acupuncture and Chinese herbs for lowering cholesterol are an excellent alternative to the western class of drugs called “Statins”.  Acupuncture will help the “qi” or energy of the body to move throughout the body eliminating stagnations.

Herbal Formulas:
The Chinese have used treasured herbs for centuries to promote healthy Cholesterol levels. *In one study, 98% of subjects with high cholesterol were within normal range after six weeks of treatment with the Chinese herb Jue Ming Zi.

The "Cholesterol Clearer" is an herbal medicine formula made up of several herbs known to lower cholesterol and blood pressure including Jue Ming Zi, Shan Zha and Jiao Gu Lan.  They are combined with other herbs to create a balanced effective formula.  This formula should be taken for a minimum of 6-8 weeks at a high dose followed by a lower daily maintenance dose once cholesterol is within normal range.

For your convenience, all of our herbal formulas are given in capsule form.

What to Expect:
The program for Cholesterol is 1-2 treatments per week for 4 weeks followed by 1 treatment per week for 4 weeks.
During this time the patient will be on a daily intake of traditional Chinese herbs in a formula I have created for lowering cholesterol and blood pressure.

Facial Acupuncture:
Cosmetic Acupuncture is a safe, healthy, holistic approach to aging for those who don’t want cosmetic surgery or injected chemicals. Its aim is to remove wrinkles, lift sagging skin, address muscle tension and treat underlying deficiencies. It is also referred to as constitutional facial acupuncture, acupuncture facelift, non-surgical face-lift, or facial rejuvenation.

How It Works:

Facial Lines:
For lines in the forehead and face we insert hair thin needles in under the line creating a micro-trauma that the body then fills in with collagen to repair it.  During the course of 6-8 treatments, the collagen continues to fill in the line and the line gradually disappears.

Sagging Skin:
For sagging skin around the nose and naso-labial grooves and near the chin and neck we use trigger points to stimulate lazy muscles to fire again lifting the skin and creating a more vibrant appearance.

Brightness in the Eyes:
For every facial acupuncture patient we do "Constitutional Treatments" addressing imbalances and deficiencies in Qi and Blood that maybe causing the issues at a root level. And, we do points to relieve stress and it's effects. Most people quickly regain a vibrant shine in the eyes which the Chinese call having good "Shen" or spirit reflected in the eyes making one feel and look younger, vibrant and full of life.

What To Expect:
The program for Facial Rejuvenation is 6 to 10 treatments, 1-2 treatments a week for three months. The effects are different for each person based on their constitution and health. Treatments are gentle and gradual and accumulate with time.  Lifestyle and diet are addressed, as overall health is reflected in the face and skin.  Patients usually notice results after 4 to 5 sessions. Treatments take about an hour and are supplemented with take home Chinese herbal formulas to improve the underlying constitutional deficiency.

Treatment of Hemorrhoids with Acupuncture and Herbs:
There are several pattern pathologies that cause Hemorrhoids in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM).  Intestinal Wind will have bright red blood, little or no pain and no other symptoms. Dryness of the Intestine usually occurs with chronic constipation. Damp Heat will have inflammation, swelling, pain with a red tongue, greasy coat and rapid, slippery pulse.  Spleen deficiency allows Qi (energy) to sink resulting in protruding hemorrhoids and possibly even anal prolapse with feelings of fatigue and bloating after meals.

Treatment:
We use a combination of Acupuncture, with Chinese herbal formulas.

Herbal Formulas for Hemorrhoids:
Internal:

The internal Chinese herbal formula is a well-balanced formula that address all of the above causes of hemorrhoids.  It is a customized classic formula that I have worked on extensively and modified for contemporary use.

Topical:
The topical herbal formula is a hemorrhoids cream invented several hundred years ago by the Ma Ying Long family. It is the most commonly used hemorrhoids medicine in China for itching, burning, and discomfort.  It clears toxic heat, removes the putrid tissues and promotes regeneration.  The ointment is also used to relieve pain and swelling caused by hemorrhoids and anal fissures.

This Hemorrhoids Ointment is also used in China to get rid of bags and dark circles under the eyes.

Dietary Suggestions:
Avoid fatty foods and deep fried meats or fast-food hamburgers, and cut down alcohol consumption, especially wine.
Eat more fiber to help soften the stool and reduce the strain.
Drink eight glasses of water each day.
Take 1000-3000 mg of vitamin C per day, to helps maintain the integrity of veins, and eat more flavonoids and anthocyanins.  Sources of flavonoids include lemons, limes, apples, tomatoes, onions and carrots; sources of anthocyanins include dark, red berries, blueberries, cherries, grapes and red cabbage.
Another natural food remedy for hemorrhoids is to eat a banana on an empty stomach every day.

Acupuncture Program For Hemorrhoids:
The treatment protocol for Hemorrhoids is one-two treatments week one followed by one treatment per week for two weeks and then once a month or as needed.

Chinese Herbal formulas are used internally and externally for the duration of treatment and as needed thereafter for prevention.

Herbal Formulas

Robert Youngs Acupuncture's Herbal Formulas:
We have created modern versions of Classic Chinese Herbal Formulas used effectively to treat disease for hundreds of years. Through scientific research and clinical experience, these herbal formulas have been found to be effective yet gentle with few to no side effects unlike western pharmaceuticals. We welcome questions and and are available for herbal consults, or see your local acupuncturist.  Many of the Herbal Formulas we use are Available in the STORE.

Chinese Herbs Dose Size:
This is one of the most common sticking points for western patients raised on pharmaceuticals; you have to take a lot of them. It is also one of the best things about Chinese Herbs. Here's a new way to think about it:
They are "healing foods"!  A normal dose of Chinese herbs is 6-8 capsules three times a day. They are very effective and well worth it -natural is better!

In western culture, people are used to taking one tiny pill, it works within minutes and then the side effects last for months to years.  Herbs work more slowly and gently, but have few to no side effects!

Chinese Herbs and Health:
Thousands of years of study and practical application have gone into Traditional Chinese Medicine's herbal formulas.  There is an herbal formula for just about every modern disease.  In addition to internal diseases, herbs are also used topically for cuts and sores, or for strained muscles and tendons.

Formulas Vs. Single Herbs:
Combining herbs into a formula has a synergistic effect making them more powerful than using the same single herbs on their own.  In a traditional Chinese herbal formula, there can be herbs to guide to the affected body area, herbs to tonify, and herbs to move the blood & qi.  Often as many as 12-15 different herbs will be used in a formula.

Herb Consistency:
Herbs are powerful supplements with little or no side effects.  They are one hundred percent natural and can consist of plant, animal and mineral substances.  Since they are organic in nature, they are taken in much higher doses than one might be used to when taking western drugs.  We use herbs from companies that have very strict quality control standards.

How To Take Formulas:
The herbal formulas we use are in capsule or pill form but are also available in a powder that you can mix into hot water.  They are generally taken three times a day.  Since they are organic in nature, they are taken in much higher dosages than one might be used to when taking western drugs.

The most important thing about herbs is to take them - if you take them every day, as instructed, they will work wonders for your health.

Many of the Herbal Formulas we use are Available in the STORE.

Herb Quality:

Infertility

Treatment of Infertility With Acupuncture:

Acupuncture and Chinese herbs balance the endocrine system and relieve stress, thus improving fertility for both men and women.  Research out of Tel Aviv University, published in the Journal of Integrative Medicine shows that when Acupuncture is used with western treatments, fertility rates are 26% higher than without Acupuncture.  Doctors are now encouraging women to get acupuncture on the same day as in vitro fertilization (IVF).

What to Expect:
Acupuncture and herbs are recommended to begin as soon as the couple starts to think about pregnancy.  The protocol for fertility is one treatment a week for three to four months.  Herbal formulas are prescribed on a case by case basis.

Menopause

Treatment of Menopause with Acupuncture:

Many studies, including a recent one in Michigan by Henry Ford Hospital have found that Acupuncture and Chinese herbs are effective and safe for treatment of menopausal symptoms.  They can be used together with western medicine or as an alternative therapy.

Traditional Chinese Medicine:
Women in China have known for centuries that Kidney Yin function decreases with age. They start taking Yin boosting herbs in their 40's and are surprised by the discomfort that American women suffer as they are able to prevent these issues from occurring.

What to Expect:
If you are in your late 30's or 40's, we recommend acupuncture at 4-5 times per year and often an herbal formula to balance hormones, build blood and smooth liver qi stagnation and stress. Our natural herbal formula "Women's Harmony" is recommended for 2-3 menstrual cycles to bring hormones back into balance.

Hot Flashes:
First, we use acupuncture and herbal formula combinations to eliminate the hot flashes, night sweats and mood swings which are Kidney Yin Deficiency issues in Chinese Medicine.  For example, one herb of the more than 20 that are used in Kidney Yin Deficiency formulas is Zhi Mu.  This herb clears deficiency heat, stops sweating and quenches thirst.
Our natural herbal formula "Menopause -Heat Clearer" is recommended for 2-3 menstrual cycles.

After clearing deficiency heat......

Balancing Hormones (Weight Gain and Memory):
We then add in the formula "Menopause -Hormone Balancer" to balance hormones and nourish the blood and yin which decline with age. We also add in additional herbs to boost the Kidney Yang function to decrease weight gain and increase memory.

Chinese Herbs:
There are often as many as 14 herb in a menopausal herbal formula.  As an example, one herb often used in the Kidney Yang Deficiency aspect is He Shou Wu.  Several published clinical trials have shown He Shou Wu promotes learning and memory, lowers total cholesterol and increases hair growth.

Treatment Protocol:
The treatment protocol for hot flashes and night sweats associated with menopause is 1-2 treatments per week for 4 weeks concurrent with a Chinese herbal formula.  This is usually followed by 1 treatment per week for 4 weeks concurrent with Chinese herbs depending on the patient's response.  Many women at this point simply need to slowly decrease dosage on their herbal formula combined with an occasional acupuncture treatment.

Pain

Treatment of Pain With Acupuncture:
Acupuncture is well known for treating pain.  The National Institutes of Health recognized acupuncture as an effective treatment for pain in 1997.  Types of pain treated include headaches, neck pain, back pain, carpal tunnel syndrome, chronic pain, menstrual cramps, surgical pain and arthritis.

Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) treats pain by looking at the body as a whole and considering other symptoms that may be occurring concurrently, to form a diagnosis based on the total picture.

Acupuncture and Chinese herbs are super effective in speeding recovery. Many sports teams including Sf 49ers, NY Knicks and Olympic athletes now enlist Acupuncturists to decrease recovery time from injuries and surgery. Acupuncture decreases inflammation and increases circulation. There are many natural Chinese herbs with no side effects that do the same plus they generate tissue, flesh and bind blood vessels greatly speeding recovery.

What To Expect:
Each treatment is personalized to accommodate the individual’s pain.  We also use treatments such as moxabustion, e-stem, or cupping to help make the pain subside as quickly as possible.  We usually recommend 1-3 treatments per week for 4 weeks concurrent with a Chinese herbal formula.  After re-evaluation treatments may continue.

PMS/Menstrual Issues

Treatment of Menstrual Issues With Acupuncture:
Regular acupuncture and Chinese herbs are very effective in treating and preventing PMS and regulating healthy, regular menstrual cycles.   In a recent review of eight scientific studies, acupuncture was able to reduce the symptoms of PMS by 78 percent.
Our natural herbal formula "Women's Harmony" is recommended for 2-3 menstrual cycles to bring hormones back into balance.

How Acupuncture Works For Menstrual Issues:
Acupuncture stimulates areas of electrical sensitivity beneath the surface of the skin, sending impulses to the hypothalamic-pituitary system, which in turn releases endorphins.  By encouraging the release of endorphins a healthy functioning hormonal system is created which is why Acupuncture is so effective for PMS, Fertility, Regular Menstrual Cycles as well as for Stress and Pain.

Irregular Menstruation, Amenorrhea, Irritability & more:
First, we use acupuncture and herbs to balance the hormones, build blood and remove stress, which are usually Liver Qi Stagnation and Liver Blood Deficiency issues in Chinese Medicine.  For example, one of the herbs in a formula for balancing hormones is Bai Shao.  This herb soothes irritability, nourishes the blood and regulates menstrual problems.

After balancing and nourishing.....

Pain, Hormonal Acne, Dysmenorrhea:
We use additional herbs later in the monthly cycle to move the blood, break up stagnation, clear heat and eliminate pain which are Liver/Kidney/Blood issues in Chinese Medicine. Our natural herbal formula "Women's Relief" is recommended for those with pain before or during menstruation.

Chinese Herbs:
Our natural herbal formulas for menstrual issues are plant based and so have few side effects. For menstrual issues we highly recommend "Women's Harmony" and "Women's Relief".

Treatment Protocol:
The treatment protocol for PMS, Amenorrhea, Dysmenorrhea and other Menstrual issues is 1-2 treatments per week for 4 weeks in conjunction with a Chinese herbal formula.  This is followed by 1 treatment per week for 4-8 weeks depending on the patient's response. Treatment for three menstrual cycles is ideal in order to ensure the body and central nervous system are functioning optimally and hormones are fully balanced.

Stress/Anxiety

Treatment of Stress/Anxiety With Acupuncture:

A fascinating study published in Anesthesiology (June 2003) showed a 66% decrease in stress for the acupuncture group of patients being transported to the hospital by ambulance.  By contrast, the control group had a 10% increase in stress.  The effectiveness of acupuncture on stress and anxiety is remarkable.

What to Expect:

You have spent years creating your body’s response to stress.  For some, that stress resides in their neck and shoulders, for others, in their stomach or other areas.  The body’s response to this stress is called disease and where that disease takes hold differs for each individual.

The treatment program for stress is personalized based on symptoms and length of time you have had them.  Usually, 1-2 treatments per week for 4 weeks are prescribed, along with an herbal formula and lifestyles changes.  This is followed by 1 treatment per week for 4-8 weeks depending on the individual, at which time we reassess and more forward.
