Herb Dose Size

Standard starting dose size is four 500mg capsules, three times a day. For most herbal formulas doctors suggest a Higher dose - by body weight - to more accurately address individual needs. 

And a person can increase to the next body weight size if results are not optimal after a week or if more immediate results are needed.

Using pharmaceuticals all their lives, it trains people to take one tiny pill per day.  Plant medicine doesn’t work that way.  
Natural medicinal herbs, like Chinese herbs, Ayurvedic Herbs, European herbs - they’re pretty amazing. Very few Side effects and the effects last long term. BUT-  you Gotta take them in the right amount. 

So What is the Right Amount?
So think of herbs like a healthy food that has benefits you want to achieve, like eating a carrot to get beta carotene - you’d need to eat 10 carrots.   

So, If you think of grinding those up and then condensing them so that you could put them into a capsule to get the health benefits you’re going to have to take quite a few capsules a few times a day for several days for a Branch - or symptom only treatment, or several months for  Root - or underlying cause - treatment.
Can you wrap your brain around that?

So then just use the following chart to help you with your suggested dose by body weight. This is just a general guideline so talk to  your herbalist for specific help.

Body Weight I Dose

100-110lbs - 4 caps 2-3x day

110-140lbs - 4 caps 3x day

140-170lbs - 5 caps 3x day

170-210lbs - 6 caps 3x day

210-240 lbs - 7 caps 3x day

 240-280 - 8 caps 3x day

Think of herbs as "healing foods". 

In western culture, people are used to taking one tiny pharmaceutical pill, it works within hours but then the side effects last for months to years and the results don't last. Herbs work slowly and gently, but have few to no side effects! The results are more permanent and you won't need to take herbs forever.

How to Stop Taking Herbs -You Don’t need to take them forever:

As your symptoms start to subside, you can slowly decrease the dose size of the herbs. If it is a formula you are taking for acute symptoms, you can decrease more quickly.

If it is a formula you are taking for a more chronic condition like pms pain or chronic acne, (WOMEN’S HARMONY, CHRONIC SKIN, STRESS and so on)….you’ll want to stay on the herbs for at least 2-4 months to give the body time to create a new equilibrium and to develop new and better habits of metabolism and hormonal balancing. 

Then, after you’ve been stable for at least 4 weeks, then you can decrease dose size by 1 capsule per dose for one week, and then the following week decrease by 1 capsule per dose again until after several weeks you are not taking the herbs anymore. 

So in this example if you had been taking 4 capsules, 3x a day for 3 months and symptoms are gone, you’d decrease to 3 cap 3x day for one week, then down to 2 caps 3x day for a week and so on.

If, you know you’ll be entering a stressful period of life, you can start taking the herbs again as a preventative measure.

So how much and for how long? 

How much is best done by Body Weight.
How Long is best done by what I call a Root or Branch treatment principle.

The Branches of the tree are like your symptoms and The Roots of the tree are like the underlying cause of your symptoms.
Branches are often fixed in a few days to a week and roots usually require a few months.Some formula are just Branch and might need to be combined with a Root Formula for treating the underlying cause.
